Sexism In Art, Politics And The Media

Guerrilla Girls

The concept of my “Constructed Situation” Ce Rappel is consistent with Guerrilla Girls, who have had a significant impact in the contemporary art industry regarding feminism, for example with the artwork The Advantages Of Being A Woman Artist (1988) Figure 1). I have been particularly influenced by the piece Do Women Have To Be Naked To Get Into the Met Museum? (1989) (Figure 2) for its use of graphic design and typography which raises awareness of the ‘lack of women artists represented in major contemporary art establishments’ (Elbaor, 2016). The piece stimulated controversy because it ‘point(ed) a critical finger at double standards prevalent in the art world’ (Manchester, 2004), thus exposing injustices and sexism in art, politics and the media. This has led me to believe that this style of artwork has become paradigmatic of post-modern feminist’s social critique and raises further questions including: How does provocative art examine the nuances of one’s discomfort? What other artists use controversy or participation to stimulate a discussion/ experience?
