ABOUT
Here at Masculinity In Question not only did I want to provide a platform for me to professionally present my artwork and "Constructed Situations" but also to stimulate a significantly experience for each individual audience member regarding the complicated socio-political issues of masculinity in 2021.

ARTIST STATEMENT

“Constructed Situations”, a term coined by Tino Sehgal, is a concept that Marc Richardson has reinvented, consciously using multiple disciplines including photography and digital media, as a form of socially engaged art to explore masculinity. Richardson’s practice functions to stimulate discussions and significantly unique experiences via audience participation, intersubjectivity and ephemerality to explore certain complexities of masculinity. Each “Constructed Situation” develops into the next to explore the influence of the media on queer culture, addressing socio-political issues such as male objectification, male body standards and queer masculinity.

COLLABORATIVE STATEMENT
Marc Richardson from Nottingham Trent University initiated a collaboration with Coventry University graduate Kieran Rea for the creation of the sound artwork: Masquerade. Rea contributed their sound engineering skills using the DAW software FL Studio to amalgamate various voices, sounds and words which were quoted and recorded from a questionnaire conducted by Richardson. This was combined with the concept of “Constructed Situations”, a term coined by Tino Sehgal, incorporating audience participation and intersubjectivity to provoke discussions and experiences on masculinity in relation to male mental health, as a form of socially engaged art.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Nottingham and Cheltenham-based multidisciplinary artist Marc Richardson, who is half French, is in their final year at Nottingham Trent University studying BA Hons Fine Art. Richardson’s experience of growing up as a queer male in the twenty-first century has inspired their practice exploring aspects of queer masculinity via “Constructed Situations”. Richardson runs two websites, the first is Masculinity In Question which exhibits the artist’s university artworks; the second Marc Richardson Art is a business for the artist’s merchandise. Some of the artist’s latest achievements include the curation of Chevalet Gallery and the solo online exhibition One Thousand Raise Their Arms Up (2021). Richardson has collaborated outside of Nottingham Trent University, including with Kieran Rea (Coventry University), Harriet Collins (Manchester School of Art) and Alice Summers (University of Leeds). Another key experience in their practice was becoming a member of Extra Ordinary People at Eastside Projects. A forthcoming exhibition that Richardson will feature in is Stream Summercamp Extra Ordinary People and Oh No! Where’s My Show? at One Thoresby Street where the artist is a member of its committee. Richardson will further refine the concept of “Constructed Situations” to explore other aspects of masculinity after graduating from Nottingham Trent University.
